Opinion by Patricia L Johnson
If you’ve ever raised any teenagers you’ve heard the expression because so and so does it, more than once when you’ve provided a negative response to a question of the teen doing something or another that you did not want them doing. For some reason kids think the old standby, “because Mary does it, or Suzy does it, or Larry, or Tom or Harry does it”, it should be okay for them.
There’s very little logic behind their thinking, but that’s the way teens of today and yesterday think. Unfortunately that same ignorance has now been passed on to adults. In teens the attitude is somewhat amusing (if not completely and totally frustrating), in adults that attitude borders on disgusting.
A prime example is the recent comment made by 86-year old editor/publisher George Capsis. Mr. Capsis is the publisher of the West View News, a New York West Village local paper. According to the New York Post, when Publisher Capsis was asked about the shocking headline of the recent article written by James Lincoln Collier, “The Ni**er in the White House” (without the asterisks); he was quoted as saying “The editorial staff continues to object to the use of the word… in this article, however, Jim (the author) reminded me that the New York Times avoids using the word which convinced me that Westview should”.
Obviously Capsis, now well past the age of retirement is also past the age of being able to use common sense as well as common courtesy and should retire immediately. It is disrespectful to call anyone, white, black, Hispanic or Asian the “N” word, and certainly more so when the racial slur is being used to describe the President of the United States.
The article itself has been removed from the West View News website. The fact the intent of the article was to bring attention to the fact ‘far-right voters hate Obama because he is black’ and how acceptance of this ‘far-right opinion has made racism more acceptable’ to the country in general, has been lost in the shuffle due to the fact the article was allowed to be released with such a repulsive title.
The July 6th article written by the New York Post regarding this subject may be found at the following URL http://nypost.com/2014/07/06/obama-called-the-n-word-in-west-village-newspapers-headline/
Let’s fantasize for a minute and say that each of us is not African American, yet after we go to sleep tonight and wake up in the morning, we look in the mirror and find that during the night we have become African American. Our skin is now as black as the ace of spades and try as we might, we scrub and scrub and we’re not going to be able to wash away our new color.
How do you think about yourself? Are you the same person you were the night before? Are others going to look at you the same way they did the day before?
If your answer is ‘no’, is it your fault? Should you be blamed in any way whatsoever, or discriminated against by anyone, just because your skin is a different color?
Americans need to grow up!
